Welcome & Introductions
- Lauren welcomed the group opened the meeting.
Overview of Medicaid to 21 Bill
- Najja gave an overview of HB 1201/SB 5305, which would extend Medicaid to foster youth aging out of care through the age of 21.
Youth Advocacy Day
- Curtis gave a
general overview of Advocacy Day. The
schedule is 9:30-2:30 PM in Olympia. We’ll arrive and eat from 9:30-10:00; then have
speakers from 10:00-11:15. We could have a march with signs and a
campus tour from 11:15-noon. We can
bring signs into the building, but we cannot put them up inside. Also, from 11:00-noon you can visit
your legislators and drop off one pagers about the bill.
- Valerie
outlined the other speakers for the afternoon.
- Curtis said
that lunchtime is a good time for people to meet with legislators. They have meetings in the morning and
afternoon, but lunch is a good time.
- Lauren gave a
food update.
- Valerie and
Joanna gave a transportation update.
- We are all
encouraged to leave Olympia by 2:30 PM so we don’t get stuck in rush hour traffic.
- Maureen stated that her youth really liked hearing the legislators and the tour last
year.
- Curtis asked
if CYF knew how to contact the media in Olympia to let them
know there would be a march. MBS’
PR Specialist is also working on getting media coverage for the day.
- Curtis is
working on confirming the rooms for the day. The original rooms he reserved are now
not available. He will keep us
posted.
- Valerie asked
if we could incorporate the homelessness agenda from Homelessness Advocacy
Day on Feb. 1st.
- Sam and Ameila
agreed to be youth speakers.
- Lauren will
send out email to other agencies asking for youth speakers.
Advocacy Training Day
- Najja gave an
overview of Training Day and distributed the draft agenda.
- Curtis asked
us to put a list of questions in the packet this year, to help youth who
aren’t sure what to ask.
Transportation
- If youth need
to rides to Olympia, we can
arrange that. Each agency is
encouraged to provide transportation for their own group.
- Valerie and
Dorothy are going to coordinate to caravan from the North End.
- Orion Center will be
driving a 15 passenger van and can take extra people.
- Lauren will
send email asking agencies to confirm the number of people they are
bringing to Advocacy Day. UDYC, Orion Center, and 2100 Building
will be pick up points as needed.
Ongoing Communication
- Valerie is going to start an online calendar with the city to schedule events relating to homeless/foster/marginalized youth. This will be a resource to other groups and ASK-Y.
