Intro/Welcome
SKCCH Update
- A Homeless Youth Summit will be held on Oct. 27th. The purpose is to educate city/county officials about the issues of homeless youth. Planning is underway and youth are welcome to attend planning meetings. They can talk to Sinan about participating.
- MBS can assist with training or a workshop, and can assist with snacks.
- So far, 5 city council members are attending, as is the CEH director.
- Additional support is being provided by NWNY and the YMCA.
- The hope is for 30-40 youth to attend.
CEH Homeless Youth & Youth Adult Committee Update
- They are positioning to receive funds from the 2163 bill. The group is working to make its agenda known to the community and the larger CEH group.
- The group talks about how mentoring can help keep youth in transitional housing and be successful. Gary stated that the “dorm approach” to transitional living is being replaced with different kinds of mentoring, which is much more beneficial for youth.
- MBS youth stated that there is a shortage of transitional housing/resources for youth under 18.
HB 2002 Implementation
- Applications have been given out; the enrollment process has been determined. 30 youth have applied and been accepted. The next 20 are applying and can participate in January 2007.
CPS Reports for Older Adolescents
- After the passage of SB 5583 last year, Jim has received fewer calls related to long wait times for adolescent CPS reports.
2007 Youth Advocacy Day and Training Day
- Think about what committees you want to participate in to plan these days.
2007 Advocacy Agenda
- Rep. Pettigrew and Housing/Healthcare for Youth Over 18
- Rep. Pettigrew is planning to work in some way to assist youth (not just foster youth) who turn 18 and need housing and healthcare. He is on the Healthcare committee in the House. The question is how broad the assistance would be for youth: homeless youth, or all youth? Jim is urging him to keep it open for all youth.
- When a draft of the bill is ready, MBS will email it to the group.
- Braam
- The state budget request includes a good number of items related to Braam compliance. We will advocate for these to be adopted.
Other Business
- A few members have asked if it would be possible to change the meeting date for ASK-Y. Lauren will email the group to see if there is interest in changing the day.
